## Teeth Whitening in Yardley

A bright, white smile can boost your confidence and leave a lasting impression. At Yardley Dental Arts, we offer professional teeth whitening services that can help you achieve a bright, beaming smile. But have you ever wondered how these treatments work? Let’s delve into the science behind professional teeth whitening.

## What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Before we explore how teeth whitening works, it’s essential to understand what causes tooth discoloration. Factors like aging, certain foods and drinks (such as coffee, tea, and red wine), tobacco use, and even some medications can stain your teeth over time.

## The Composition of a Tooth

Teeth are made up of several layers: the innermost pulp, followed by dentin, and finally the hard outer layer called enamel. When your teeth become discolored, the stains typically penetrate the enamel and settle into the dentin, making them tough to remove with standard brushing.

## The Process of Teeth Whitening

Active Ingredient: Most professional whitening treatments use a hydrogen peroxide-based gel. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent that can penetrate the enamel and reach the dentin layer.

Oxidation: When applied to the teeth, hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and free radicals. These free radicals then break apart the stain compounds in the dentin, making them less complex and, therefore, less able to reflect light. This process is known as oxidation, and it results in the appearance of a whiter tooth color.

## Professional vs. Over-The-Counter Products

While you can find many over-the-counter whitening products, professional teeth whitening services like those at Yardley Dental Arts offer several advantages. Professional treatments use a higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide, meaning you’ll see results more quickly. Plus, our dental professionals ensure that the whitening process is safe, protecting your gums and other oral tissues from the bleaching agents.

## The Role of Light in Teeth Whitening

Some professional whitening treatments utilize a special light to enhance the whitening process. The light can heat the peroxide gel, accelerating the breakdown process and allowing more free radicals to be produced. This can often lead to more significant color changes in a shorter amount of time.

## Post-Whitening Care

To maintain your whitening results, it’s essential to take care of your teeth post-treatment. This means maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding staining substances, and getting touch-up treatments as recommended by your dentist.
