If you’re looking for a dental office offering virtually pain-free root canals in Yardley and the surrounding communities, please contact us at Yardley Dental Arts. We understand many people are apprehensive when they hear they need root canal therapy to save a tooth, but we can put your mind at ease by explaining what will happen, how you’ll be numb, and how we can help alleviate your pain.
Most people don’t start out looking for root canals in Yardley; they just know they are in pain, which is often severe. Sometimes, they simply have a cavity, but if the pain is extreme, our dentists will explain why a root canal is necessary to preserve the tooth. It’s always our goal to save a natural tooth.
Inside of a tooth, there are pulp chambers in the crown (the part of the tooth you see) and pulp canals in the roots. The pulp contains tissues and nerves. If the pulp becomes infected and inflamed, it has nowhere to expand. The only way to save your tooth from extraction is to perform a root canal.
1. Deep decay – Poor oral hygiene can lead to tooth decay.
2. Trauma – A broken tooth from an accident or injury can allow bacteria to infect tooth pulp.
3. Fractures – You may not even be aware your tooth has a hairline crack.
4. Bruxism – Grinding your teeth at night can wear them down to the point where the pulp is in danger.
5. Failed fillings – A cracked filling can trap bacteria under it where it can eat a hole that will eventually reach the pulp.
First, you’ll have an exam and one of our dentists will order x-rays. Next, your dentist will numb the area thoroughly; we don’t want you to feel any pain. Our dentist will then drill a small hole in your tooth, usually in the chewing surface if it’s a molar. He or she will use special instruments to pull out the pulp and then disinfect the pulp chambers and canals. Our dentist will then fill these empty spaces with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The last step is putting a temporary filling over the access hole. For this visit, you’re done.
When you leave, you can go back to school or work the next day. You may feel some residual discomfort from the swelling surrounding the tooth, but an OTC pain reliever will eliminate it. Our dentist will explain the tooth is more vulnerable now and it will need a crown put over it to restore its strength. We can make the crown look just like the surrounding teeth. You’ll return in a few weeks to get the crown, and in the meantime, you have to be careful with the tooth.
