You use your teeth every single day – but have you ever really thought about what they are made of? Your teeth are actually quite complex structures, made up of several different layers. Learning about your teeth can help you understand why they are so important, and how to take care of them. Let’s take a look at the anatomy of your teeth and how our Yardley dentist can help you best take care of them.

Parts of Your Teeth

Most adults have 32 teeth (including wisdom teeth). If you had your wisdom teeth removed, or were born without them, you will have 28 teeth. Each tooth is made up of three main parts:

Each tooth also has two other parts:

Your teeth are important for more than just chewing your food. They also play a role in speaking and pronouncing words correctly. Teeth can also affect the shape of your face, and they help you to keep your jawbone healthy and strong.

Caring for Your Teeth

Now that you know a little more about your teeth, it’s important to understand how to take care of them. Here are some tips from our Yardley dentist:

Brush your teeth at least twice a day: Once in the morning and once at night.

Floss your teeth at least once a day: Flossing helps to remove plaque and bacteria from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can’t reach.

Visit our office for regular cleanings and checkups: We recommend that patients visit us every six months for a cleaning and checkup. This helps us to catch any problems early and prevent more serious issues from developing.

Use fluoride: Fluoride is a mineral that helps to strengthen your tooth enamel and prevent cavities. You can get fluoride from toothpaste, mouthwashes, and even some drinking water.

Avoid tobacco products: Tobacco use can lead to a number of dental problems, including gum disease, tooth loss, and bad breath.

Eat a healthy diet: A balanced diet is good for your overall health – including your teeth and gums. Be sure to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks, which can cause cavities.
