Root Canals in Yardley

Many people experience dental fear, especially if they have to undergo a root canal. This common dental procedure has a reputation for being very scary, but it is actually quite a simple and safe procedure. A root canal is typically used to treat deep cavities, an abscessed tooth, or any other type of infection inside the tooth. Our team at Yardley Dental Arts explains what happens during a root canal.

Anesthesia

The first step of a root canal is to administer anesthesia. This will help dull the pain and make it easier for our team to work on your tooth. Depending on which type of anesthetic is used, it can take several minutes before you feel numb. However, your dental professional will never begin the procedure until they make certain that you cannot feel anything. If you still have some sensation in your tooth, your dentist can apply another round of anesthesia.

Create an Opening

Once the anesthesia sets in, our team will create an opening at the top of your tooth. This is to allow access to the deeper layers of your tooth, and it may require the use of a small drill or laser. You will not feel any pain, as you will be completely numb. Your dentist will inform you of what is going to happen before they begin, so there will be no surprises.

Removing Infected Pulp

Once the anesthesia has taken effect, your dentist will begin to remove the infected pulp from inside the tooth. This is done using a special dental tool called an endodontic file. This instrument is inserted into the opening of your tooth and used to scrape away any diseased tissue. It may take some time for all of the infected material to be removed, but your dentist will take their time to ensure that the infection is completely eliminated.

Sealing the Tooth

Once all of the infected material has been removed, our team will prepare your tooth for sealing. This involves filling any holes or cracks in the tooth and ensuring that it is free from any bacteria. Once your tooth is ready, a special dental filling will be used to seal the tooth and prevent any further infection.

Applying a Crown

Finally, after your tooth has been sealed, a crown will be applied. This will help to strengthen the tooth and protect it from further decay. The crown is typically made of porcelain or ceramic and can be matched to the color of your existing teeth. You may be given a temporary crown while your permanent crown is being made. You will then return to our office so we can apply the permanent crown and complete your treatment.
