Easter is a time of celebration for many people. It’s a time for family gatherings, fun activities for kids, and usually, lots of food, particularly sweets. While this time of year is joyous, it can wreak havoc on dental health.
Most dentists recommend brushing twice a day as part of your daily oral hygiene routine. This is especially important during Easter, when food, sweets, and teeth-staining beverages are more prevalent. To avoid a painful tooth cavity at Easter, be sure to take 2–3 minutes each morning and evening to rid your teeth and gums of food particles and harmful bacteria.
Nobody is saying not to indulge in your favorite Easter candy, but consider choosing alternatives to the sticky, gooey, or hard candies that often go hand in hand with Easter. These marshmallow treats, jelly beans, and caramels, and jawbreakers are tasty, but they easily get stuck between teeth and gums and can quickly cause decay and breakage. This is especially important if you have dental fillings or crowns as sticky, chewy candy can damage dental work.
If you do indulge in some Easter treats, be sure to rinse with water afterward. While you may think brushing is better, the truth is that too much brushing can wear away enamel and irritate gums. Simply rinsing with water will wash away excess sugar and help the saliva to neutralize the pH balance in your mouth.
Perhaps the biggest culprit when it comes to avoiding cavities at Easter is the customary Easter basket. Let’s be honest, as much as kids love waking up to see what sweet treats the bunny left, adults are just as intrigued and can’t wait to raid the bounty of treats.
Consider doing everyone a favor by assembling a basket that’s low on candy, while still being high on fun. Fill the basket with non-food items like books, stuffed animals, small toys, and stickers. You can add an Easter egg decorating kit too, because eggs are great for the teeth! When choosing candy, explore some sugar-free options.
Right after Easter is a great time to schedule a dental exam. Aside from getting a refreshing spring dental cleaning, your dentist can check for the dreaded tooth cavity, gum erosion, or other issues that may have developed over the holiday.
